The IRS officially announced the opening of the 2026 tax filing season as Monday, January 26, 2026.   As you may know, the 2025 Tax Act was passed in July. This legislation is considered to be one of the most wide-sweeping tax law changes to occur since the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. The new law is widely considered taxpayer-friendly and therefore with your 2025 return you may see increased deductions and credits as well as relaxed income thresholds. There are several new deductions; such as the tipped income deduction, the overtime deduction and the new auto loan interest deduction so don’t be alarmed if we ask for information that we have not ask for in previous years. With an increase in the state, local, and property tax deduction for a number of taxpayers, many taxpayers’ itemized deductions may exceed the standard deduction for the first time in almost a decade. Please note that one of the 2025 Tax Act provisions that we are opting to not address in the 2025 Questionnaire is the new Trump Accounts. These tax-advantageous accounts are still in the planning phase and not anticipated to be available until mid-2026. Rather, we will circle back via email to discuss the accounts in detail once more conclusive, in-depth information is available later in the year. In the meantime, if you are interested in reading up on the preliminary information, you can do so by visiting trumpaccounts.gov. Please reach out if you have questions about how the new tax law changes could benefit you.

As a reminder, many tax documents have solely become available online. This means that you may not receive all of your tax documents through your standard mail process. You may need to login to your online investment, mortgage, or Health Savings Account to retrieve your year-end tax documents. This is particularly true if you obtained Marketplace coverage through healthcare.gov. You must login to your healthcare.gov account to retrieve your Health Insurance Marketplace Statement, Form 1095-A. If you have difficulties obtaining any of your tax documents, please contact us and we will do our best to help.

As always and to meet our goal of personalized service, you can submit your tax data via your preferred method of delivery:

Upload: Our client portal is a SECURE and convenient way to upload, store, and access all your tax records at any time. This is a fully secure way to electronically share information. If you are interested, but you haven’t used the portal in the past, please email us call or to set up your portal account.

     Fax: 513-624-3909

In Person: You can drop off your tax documents (along with your signed engagement letter and completed questionnaire) Monday – Thursday, from 9am–5pm OR 24-hours a day in our lockbox located at the back entrance of the Cincinnati building and Tuesday – Thursday, from 9am–5pm at our Cleveland office. If left in the Cincinnati lockbox, we will email a confirmation that we’ve received your documents. If you need to schedule a time outside these standard hours to drop off your information, please email us at tax@zimmerman-cpa.com or call us at (513) 624-3900.

Upon receipt of your tax information, we will begin working on your returns and contact you with questions or comments as they arise. We are committed to providing excellent service in a timely manner. However, here is a reminder of a few things you can do to help expedite your return preparation:

    • Spend a few extra minutes to carefully and thoroughly review the questionnaire and organizer, answer all the questions, and make sure you address all YES questionnaire answers.
    • Submit all of your tax documents together and minimize the back-and-forth requests from us; this can reduce the time incurred on (and therefore cost of) your return preparation.
    • Provide us your information as quickly as possible once available.

The team members at Zimmerman & Co CPAs are available to answer any questions you may have now and throughout your tax preparation process. Thank you for the opportunity to continue working with you and we look forward to another successful tax season.
